Should I register for IFTA in my state?

Qualified motor vehicles which are operated in more than one IFTA member jurisdiction must hold an IFTA license and decals to operate on all IFTA jurisdiction public highways. A vehicle is a qualified motor vehicle if meets any of the following criteria:

  • Traveled in at least two or more IFTA jurisdictions
  • Heavy vehicles with three or more axles or used in trailer combination exceeding 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms.

Qualified Motor Vehicle does not cover recreational vehicles unless used for business purposes.

How do I apply for an IFTA license?

You will need to complete Kansas Application through online for International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and submit it to the Kansas Department of Revenue.

You will need a decal set per qualified vehicle. The fee is $10 for the first vehicle and $1 for each additional decal set. It takes 7-10 business days of processing time or get the decals on the same day in person.

What credentials will I receive?

Each IFTA licensee will receive one IFTA license and a set of decals with one year validity. The license photocopy must be kept in each motor vehicle.

What is the penalty and interest rate for filing a late quarterly fuel tax report?

The penalty is $50 or 10% of tax due, whichever is greater for late filing and no filing the return. Each state's delinquent taxes dues are calculated at the interest rate of 0.4167%. Each jurisdiction has interest rate calculated at the start of the day after each month’s due date, or fraction of a month until paid even if you have a net refund, fuel underpayment.
